This is a study reports of 8 cases of bleeding esophageal varices, which is the most dangerous and lethal complication of portal hypertension.
Author has treated them with non-shunting procedure, esophageal transection with EEA stapler from January of 1982 to September of 1983.
The results were as following.
1) The ages of our patient were ranged from 21?55 years. 7 cases were male. One was female. By using Child¢¥s classification, 2 cases belonged to A group, 5 cases to B group, 1 case to C group.
2) 5 cases who treated electively were revealed good postoperative course. But, the porgnosis of 3 cases who were done with emergent operation was poor.
3) 3 cases with poor prognosis were consisted with cases of severe underlying disease and high risk class.
4) During postoperative follow-up period(the longest course was 21 months), there was no evidence of recurrent bleeding, encephalopathy, and hepatic failure.
5) Liver biopsy revealed that 7 cases were postnecrotic cirrhosis and 1 case was alcoholic cirrhosis.
